Sirjan Soumak

The town of Sirjand in south Iran is the market place for local tribal and village weavers from the area to sell their goods. Traditionally the main sellers were the Afshar tribe (see Afshar section under Iranian) but lately a revival in an old technique has restarted there. Sirjan Soumak rugs are made using two techniques of weave combined to produced a very high quality floor covering or wall hanging. The soumak kilim weave is enhanced by having pile weaving added as an embellishment to give a deeper, more three dimensional effect. The designs employed are traditional tribal styles from the rest of Iran as well as local.
