Afghan

Afghani rug production has historically fallen into two areas: tribal and village weaving. Tribal weaving in Afghanistan was primarily from the Belouchi in the west making traditional prayer rugs of geometric complexity and the Turkoman in the north producing the classic deep red 'elephant's foot design'. The Russian invasion of 1979 and subsequant turmoils produced massive upheaval with large numbers of weavers leaving the country to become refugees in Iran and Pakistan (see Chobi rugs under the Pakistan section)

Generally speaking Afghani rugs and carpets are very hard wearing and represent extremely good value for money.
